To an almost sold out show of about 1900 plus, I was not sure what to expect. This tour was billed as the ALBUM ONE ALIVE meaning the band would play the entire classic debut album from start to finish in the original order (as well as assorted hits). Also hyped as the gotta see stage production of 2024.

Blackie Lawless

As many of you may or may not know, their debut album in 1984 topped the charts, went gold, got them on the PMRC hit list and was one of 1984-85 MUST see bands on tour. Giving the fans Shock ROCK, raw meat eating stage antics mixed with high energy performances second to none . Back then the original band consisted of Blackie Lawless – lead vocals, bass, Chris Holmes guitars, Randy Piper guitars and Tony Richards – drums. But keeping together such an intense talented line up was no easy task like trying contain an atom bomb.

Doug Blair – lead guitar

2024 , Blackie remains the sole member for decades now with a fantastic backing band made up of Blackie Lawless – lead vocals, rhythm guitar (1982–present), Mike Duda – bass (1995–present), Doug Blair – lead guitar (2006–present; touring 1992 and 2001)

and Aquiles Priester – drums (2017–present)

Mike Duda – bass

Let's address the white elephant in the room first. Did he or did he not lip sync and use backing tracks? Answer is it seemed so...so... yes and no. At times it seemed like the lead vocals and the backing vocals were punched in and at other times Blackie and the band it seemed they were singing for real. But no surprise here as Blackie has been completely upfront about using backing tracks to enhance the experience as said in many interviews. So the real question should be.... did the audience care?....Answer: Not one bit.

Blackie Lawless

The smell of popcorn filled the air as the band (in the first half of the show) tore into Album One in its entirety playing the songs as close as possible to the album. The carnival looking stage set looked similar to the bands last tour. Musically the fans got exactly what they came for cheering along the set list moving through song after song on the debut album. Side note: as a WASP purist I would have loved to see Chris Holmes and Randy Piper back performing these classic songs on stage with Blackie but I get it the past is the past. Saying that the current band still did a mighty fine job. But I can still dream....

Aquiles Priester – drums

The true highlight of the evening for me was the second half of the show, where the band came back from a brief intermission and dipped into their greatest hits/ deep cuts. These jewels were enhanced with the use of lighting and big screen projections which really worked well. No spoilers but Part 2 of the show was what really impressed me as a whole, especially when the band launched into 'Forever Free' off the band's 'Headless Children' album. The song and its visuals touched the whole crowd on another level.

On a last note Blackie Lawless is back on his feet after years of serious back issues and operations. He seemed very fit running around the stage.

Doug Blair – lead guitar

Conclusion, it was a great night in Montreal going back into a time machine with lots of smiling faces and a well satisfied crowd, minus raw meat. Catch W.A.S.P. on TOUR
